Who are we?
CVLHC is a group of people who are history buffs, nature lovers, educators, living historians, re-enactors, and just plain people. About 30 years ago, we decided to join together with the common purpose of enjoying history, and about 20 years ago, we were given permission to hold Living History events at the Newtown Battlefield State Park. We are an incorporated, non-profit (501-c-3) organization. All donations made to our organization are tax deductible according to New York State law.
What do we do?
In the Past, each year, CVLHC has presented two Living History events at Newtown Battlefield State Park.
1. Our season begins with the Ben Newton Memorial Civil War Re-enactment event, held the 1st weekend in May.
2. In late August, we commemorate the anniversary of the Battle of Newtown. The Battle of Newtown was the key battle of the Sullivan Expedition against the Iroquois Nations during the American Revolutionary War.
How do we promote Newtown Battlefield State Park?
1. By helping to bring attention and people to the park through our Living History events. Each year, our events bring thousands of people up to the hilltop.
2. We have constructed a historically accurate Indian Village of the type used by Northeastern Woodland Indians within the park. This village is one of only three in New York State.
3. We constructed an overlook deck near the tall monument, that offers a gorgeous view of the valley below. It's an ideal spot for a wedding!
How can you assist us?
1. By giving us your financial support, by becoming a member of the Chemung Valley Living History Center.
2. By attending our regular, monthly Membership/Board meetings.
3. By volunteering to work with us at our Living History events.
By becoming directly and actively involved with our group, you can help us to continue to honor our great American Heritage by bringing our amazing history alive, and to help ensure that Newtown Battlefield State Park remains open for future generations to use and enjoy!
